200 words about greatness | October 22 & 23, 2011

Surrounded by the beauty of an Edwardian castle and gardens right now, I’m fascinated.  From the knowledge that some of dad’s military friends graduated here, and I walked down steps and visited in the same room as was used to welcome the Queen.  I visited “Jane’s Tree” yesterday…and everywhere I look there is something that makes me feel like I’m rubbing shoulders with the greats.

Perhaps most of all, I’m here with a bunch of people who are extra ordinary and extraordinary all at the same time.  Like the guy in the next desk, or the kid that just finished college, or your neighbor over the fence they are ordinary.  Yet, they are kind, compassionate, and creative – inquisitive, interesting and intriguing. And, when they graduate, my classmates will be in the 2.5% of Canadians that hold a masters level of education.

I find that amazing. Yes, what they will know, is interesting and engaging but more important is their commitment.  No one “needs” a masters degree, but they’re doing it, most while working full time.  Grads from this program are earth shakers –fiercely committed to their world and communities. That to me seems the best kind of greatness.
